Lily & Lore

Lily & Lore

too many hobbies, not enough time.

I work in tech. I want to learn how to make basically everything. I take way too many photos. I went to Japan on my own and now I want to do that everywhere.

The Lilynlore character: a faceless figure in a pink hoodie, sat cross-legged with a laptop, surrounded by notebooks, a camera, a globe and stacked books

Tech

I’ve got a CS degree and I do this for a living. I build things and ship them.

What I want next is to actually understand what’s going on underneath all of it. Enough that when someone asks a follow-up question, I don’t start getting vague.

There are a lot of things I want to understand well. Tech is the one I want to take properly deep, so it gets more of my time than the rest.

what I use and build

how and why it actually works

Art, and making things

I love art and I like nice things. Sometimes I’d just rather make the exact thing I want instead of buying another version that’s almost right.

  • Sewing

I can do basic fitting because we have a machine at home and I got too lazy to keep going to a tailor 😭 That is very different from being able to make a dress.

What I want to learn properly is patterns, fabric, construction, finishing — how a neckline or a sleeve actually gets built. Eventually I want to just make the exact one in my head.

  • Personal style

I’ve gotten noticeably better at this over the years, and I like that it’s a thing you can actually get better at. I feel pretty solid about how I dress in an average room now.

Put me somewhere like Tokyo or Milan and I’d probably realise very quickly how much more there is to learn. Which is fine. I’d rather keep picking things up than decide I’m done learning how to dress.

  • Photography

I take a ridiculous number of photos. Trips, outfits, people, ordinary days. I want to get better technically, but mostly I like being able to look back at a period of my life.

My biggest fear about travelling alone was genuinely who is going to click my pictures 😭 A tripod solved it — I can retake, change the angle, take my time, nobody waiting. I probably end up with more photos travelling alone than I would with someone else. The tripod is basically my travel photo partner now.

And then

  • Embroidery
  • Fashion design
  • Drawing
  • Painting
  • Pottery
  • Crochet
  • Knitting
  • Calligraphy
  • Sculpture
  • Digital art

… and the list continues.

Places

Japan

· Tokyo, Kyoto, Nara, Osaka, Fuji

My first solo international trip. I planned it to death, travelled at a completely unreasonable pace, and then kept changing my own plans whenever something more interesting turned up — which was probably the best part of it.

Mostly it just made travelling alone feel completely doable — and now I want to do it everywhere.

India
Japan

Places I want to see

Honestly, everywhere.

That list only ever gets longer, so there is not much point writing it down.

Everything else

Not a syllabus. And I don’t mean all of these equally.

Skills, not subjects

I want to think more clearly, ask better questions, explain what I think properly, and be confident enough to speak — without pretending I know things I don’t.

  • Communication
  • Public speaking
  • Storytelling
  • Asking better questions
  • Counter-questioning
  • Critical thinking
  • Forming opinions

Want to understand properly

Enough that I can actually participate in the conversation.

  • Economics
  • Finance
  • Geopolitics
  • Business
  • Psychology
  • History
  • Politics
  • Current affairs
  • Science

Useful, because adulthood keeps asking

Nobody really teaches you this stuff and somehow you’re just expected to know it.

  • Visas
  • Taxes
  • Insurance
  • Healthcare
  • Documents
  • Banking

Want to keep up with

  • Countries
  • Cultures
  • Movies
  • Art
  • Literature
  • People worth knowing about

Things I just genuinely like

  • Space
  • Watches
  • Bags
  • Brands
  • Fashion
  • Makeup
  • Skincare
  • Random useful knowledge

Why any of this exists

Mostly I just want more depth. There’s nothing yet where I can say ask me anything about this, I know it properly. I want there to be.

The other half is confidence, and I’m picky about what I mean by that.

I don’t want confidence without knowledge. I want confidence without unnecessary self-doubt.

If I know something, say it. If I don’t know enough, I still want to jump in — just to ask and understand, not to pretend I already have an opinion.

a bit about a lot

a lot about a few

There was a time when seeing someone prettier or better dressed just automatically made me feel worse about myself. My body barely changed. My taste and styling did.

Now I can think someone looks amazing without it turning into so I must look bad. That’s what I want with everything else. Someone knowing more than me should make me curious, not make me shrink.

I’m also the kind of person who tries something for four hours and then compares herself to someone who has done it for six years. Working on that one.

Lily for the flower, and for Lilly Linton in Storm and Silence — loud, stubborn, argumentative, wrong pretty often, and never toned down to be easier to like. It also happens to start with the same letter as the name on my birth chart.

Lore is the rest of it. Lilynlore is the version that fits in a URL.

No face on any of this for now. Not to be mysterious. I just don’t want my identity to be the point of it yet.

Where I actually am

I’m not going to pretend I’ll keep ten different things updated regularly, because I know exactly how that ends. I’d get overwhelmed and eventually post nowhere.

So this page will probably change less often. The more regular, random stuff goes here:
